Sony will phase out the PlayStation 4 in favour of the new Slim version of the console, the Wall Street Journal reports.
This follows recent leaked images of the PlayStation 4 Slim, which is considerably smaller than the current PlayStation 4 console.
According to the report, Sony plans to announce a new PlayStation 4 standard model along with its upcoming PlayStation Neo console at its event next month.
The new standard model is reportedly expected to be the PlayStation 4 Slim, which could be cheaper than the current device.
The PlayStation 4 will be phased out in favour of the new Slim version of the console, with Sony employing a similar hardware roll-out to that of Microsoft.
Both companies have introduced slim, updated standard models of their respective consoles, and are set to reveal their next generation of hardware soon.
The report also states that Sony has cut production of the current model of the PlayStation 4 in anticipation of the upcoming news conference in September.
The company is expected to reveal two new consoles at its September news conference, namely the PlayStation 4 Slim and the “Neo” – its next-gen 4K-Ready gaming console.
