Details regarding AMD’s supposed HD 6990 graphics card have emerged, and it is expected to cram two HD 6970 GPUs onto a single graphics card. This will make it AMD’s most powerful graphics card, effectively replacing AMD’s current performance champion, the HD 5990 which runs two HD 5870 GPUs on a single piece of silicone.
The HD 6990 is expected to boast a pant wetting 3,000-plus shaders, 4GB of onboard memory, and a combined memory bandwidth of 300GB/s. The card will supposedly require around 300W of power to run.

Nvidia is expected to release its own dual GPU monster sometime in March, in the form of the GTX 590. This means that we can expect the cards to launch in fairly close proximity to one another, opening up an entire new performance (and price) sector for enthusiasts.

The GTX 580 beats the HD 6970 by a fair margin in most benchmarks, so it is safe to assume that the GTX 590 will be the fastest graphics card in the world. The GTX 580 is also significantly more expensive, so we can expect the GTX 590 to be the most expensive graphics card in the world as well. The GTX 580 currently retails for around R5,300 locally, so the GTX 590 could well go for over R10,000. If the HD 6990 is double the price of the HD 6970, then we can expect to pay about R8,000.
