Christmas buyers guide: Monitors

5 December 2011

It’s that time of the year again when tinsel, Christmas lights and baubles litter the house and everyone is trying to spread goodwill, and stuff.

Meanwhile you’re locked away in your room/man-cave playing the huge catalogue of AAA titles that have recently been released.

Whether you’re hoping for some new hardware from Santa, feel the need to upgrade after the pounding the latest AAA titles gave your PC, or are just spending your well earned Christmas bonus, here are some great monitors to take into consideration:

Samsung 27-inch S27A550

One of the cheapest 27-inch LED monitors you can buy, this Samsung 27-inch is LED backlit, runs full HD resolutions, has ample connectivity options and gives you 27 inches of screen realestate. It might be missing 3D capabilities, but for the price you can’t say no. The Samsung 27 inch S27A550 retails locally for around R4,000.00.

The mack daddy of Samsung’s current PC monitor lineup, the S27A950 provides affluent gamers with almost every feature they would require from a PC monitor. A vast array of connectivity options, LED backlighting, Full HD resolutions and 3D capabilities mean this monitor should last you for a long time. It’s pricy at around R6,500.00, but really now – just look at it.

AAVARA Monitor mounts

So you run a dual or tri screen setup? Nice. But do you run this setup, like a baws?

This is where AAVARA monitor mounts come in, allowing you to mount screens up to 24-inches large on independant swing arms. Combine one of these with multiple thin bevel display panels for gaming goodness.

Twin screen mounts retail for around R1,000.00, while tri-screen mounts will set you back around R1,600.00. Mounts to hold four or six monitors are also available if your wallet is willing.

If the above AAVARA monitor mounts appeal to you, perhaps you should consider the LG E2341T-BN 23-inch monitor. Sporting a 17.5mm slim profile, thin side bevels and VESA mounts, two or three (or more) of these monitors would make a nice eyefinity or surround vision setup. These retail for around R2,200.00 per monitor.

If you’re feeling adventurous, maybe a 40-inch Full HD TV is more to your tastes?

While it might not be ideal as a daily work monitor, watching movies or gaming on a 40-inch Full HD LED TV is a great experience; well worth it if you have the space to accommodate a monitor this size.

Before you bite the bullet and buy two 23-inch screens and an AAVARA mount, consider the LA40D503. It does only retail for around R4,700.00 after all.
