Rumor: AMD to slash GPU prices

3 March 2009

If you are currently in the market for a new graphics card, then we strongly recommend that you sit tight for the time being.

According to DailyTech , AMD is about to drop their GPU prices.

The information apparently comes from “industry sources”, but at this point we are considering them rumors. If these rumors are true, then the Radeon HD 4870 512MB will drop a hefty $50 in price from $199to $149. We can therefore hope for a local price cut of around R500 which should see the cheaper HD 4870s retailing for around R2500.

The HD 4850 will apparently also see a reduction from its current price point of around $160 to $129, which should translate to a local price cut of around R300. Currently the cheaper HD 4850s are retailing for around R2000, so the rumored price cuts would see it selling at around the R1700 mark, further improving the cards already excellent performance/price ratio.

These price cuts are apparently going to take effect as of sometime this week, at least in the USA that is.

Unfortunately, SA consumers will most likely have to wait a few weeks, or even months before the new prices set in, and that is if we even see them. Of course this is all contingent on whether the US prices do recede. We will update as more information becomes available.
