Rumor: AMD/ATi will launch HD 4890 in April

9 March 2009

There have been murmurings of ATi bringing out a new GPU called the RV790 for some time. According to Fudzilla, the new card will be dubbed the HD 4890 and will come in just above the HD 4870 in terms of performance.

It seems doubtful that the new GPU will be able to beat Nvidia’s monster GTX 285, but it will replace the HD 4870 as ATi’s premier single card solution.

The 4890 is based on different architecture to previous cards in the 4800 series, and should offer better clock for clock performance.

The new 55nm GPU should launch in April according to Fudzilla.

AMD has yet to make any formal announcement on the new GPU, so the information provided by Fudzilla’s sources should be taken with a pinch of salt for the time being.
