While the cutting edge of consumer CPU technology has completely moved on to Quad-Core, AMD is preparing to launch its first 45nm Dual Core CPU.
The Phenom II X2 500, codenamed Callisto, will most probably blaunched at Computex in June. Callisto will essentially be a quad-core Deneb, as seen in the regular Quad Core Phenom II CPUs, with the obvious exception that it will have two of its four cores disabled.
The Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition will be clocked at a hefty 3.1GHz and will feature 2x512KB L2 cache as well as an impressive 6MB L3 cache.
Some rumors indicate that certain motherboards will be able to unlock Callisto’s two dormant cores, effectively giving users a quad-core CPU for the price of a dual-core.
