Most popular Intel motherboards for overclocking

Overclocking can be an important consideration for gamers who are looking at buying a new motherboard.

Whether you’re planning on breaking out the liquid nitrogen and chasing for world records, or you just want a good motherboard to bump up your CPUs clock speed just enough to make your system feel more responsive, buying a popular overclocking board is always a good investment.

HWBot.org is an online ranking system which “gathers specifications and benchmark performance results of computer hardware, as well as serving a non-stop overclocking competition platform for amateur and die-hard overclockers.”

The system categorises hardware as well as overclocking results for systems worldwide, running the most popular benchmarking software. Using the HWBot system, we can see how many submissions have used a specific motherboard for the overclock, showing which boards are most popular among casual and hardcore overclockers.

Below are the most popular motherboards used by Intel’s latest two platforms:

Intel Socket LGA 1155

Intel’s socket LGA 1155 platform was originally launched with Sandy Bridge-based second generation Core i3/5/7 processors. It’s also used with third generation Intel Core processors based on the Ivy Bridge manufacturing process, which brought with it a range of new motherboard options.

Intel Socket LGA 1155
Manufacturer Model Chipset # of submissions
Asus Maximus IV Extreme Intel P67 10,609 submissions
Asus P8P67 Deluxe Intel P67 3,723 submissions
Asus Maximus IV Gene-Z Intel Z68 3,717 submissions
Asus P8P67 Pro Intel P67 3,686 submissions
Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD7 Intel P67 3,238 submissions
Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD4-B3 Intel P67 2,082 submissions
Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD4 Intel P67 1,943 submissions
Asus Maximus IV Extreme-Z Intel Z68 1,898 submissions
Asus Maximus V Gene Intel Z68 1,660 submissions
MSI P67A-GD65 Intel P67 1,527 submissions

Asus dominates the ranking here, taking the top four spots on the list. The Asus Maximus IV Extreme also has nearly three times the amount of submissions, highlighting the immense popularity of this board.

Gigabyte are the next most popular board manufacturer, taking spots 5, 6 and 7 with their Ultra Durable series boards. Asus and MSI round out the remainder of the top 10.

Intel Socket LGA 2011

Intel’s socket LGA 2011 platform launched in November 2011, alongside Sandy Bridge-E enthusiast processors. It will also host processors based on the Ivy Bridge-E process set to launch towards the end of 2012.

Intel Socket LGA 2011
Manufacturer Model Chipset # of submissions
Asus Rampage IV Extreme Intel X79 3,331 submissions
MSI X79A-GD65 8D Intel X79 348 submissions
Asus P9X79 Pro Intel X79 204 submissions
MSI Big Bang XPower II Intel X79 203 submissions
