AMD has officially announced its Phenom II 965 Black Edition CPU. The 965 BE is the fastest AMD CPU ever released and it runs at a stock frequency of 3.4GHz.
The CPU’s TDP has also been bumped up from 125W to 140W, although many reviews are indicating that the real-world power consumption of the CPU is almost identical to that of the 955 Black Edition. Furthermore, from what many early benchmarks are indicating, the CPU’s 200MHz advantage over AMD’s previous top chip bares little improvement over the 955 BE.
Priced at $245 (R1960), the CPU is just $20 (R180) more expensive than the 955BE. We are expecting the CPU to retail locally for around R2800. AMD could not comment on local availability or pricing at this point it time, although it is safe to assume that it will be available by the end of August.
