Dell Alienware X51 offers Ubuntu Linux configuration

Dell’s Alienware X51 has been available for purchase for over a year and this week the company announced that the X51 would be receiving the same treatment as their XPS13 Ultrabook, being available for puchase with a version of Linux in the Ubuntu flavour.

Dell’s advertising suggested that they want to be part of the Steambox initiative as well, displaying the Steam for Linux landing page within the Steam client. Dell calls the X51 “the ultimate in gaming hardware” for the Linux community. The official press release mentions how secure Linux is and how many free applications there are available under the GPL.

Says Dell, “With over 25 gaming titles available and more being added, users can access Steam For Linux to play online games, including your favourite titles like Team Fortress 2 and Serious Sam 3.” Its worth noting that Steam currently has over 150 Linux-compatible titles available, although many of these are indie games.

In the US the Linux-packing X51 starts off at $599 (approx. R5,300) for the X51 chassis, a Core i3-3220 dual-core processor with Hyperthreading, 3GB of DDR3 RAM, Nvidia’s OEM-only Geforce GT645 1GB and a 1TB hard drive, as well as the smaller power supply. It scales up all the way to the Core i7-3770, 8GB of RAM, Nvidia’s Geforce GT660 1.5GB, a Wi-Fi card built-in and a 1TB hard drive, all for just $1049 (approx. R9,300).
