MSI GX70 gaming laptop boasts updated AMD hardware

The MSI GX60 is currently the cheapest way to get your hands on the AMD Radeon HD7970M in a notebook. It packs in the HD7970, AMD’s A10-4600M, 8GB of RAM and the option to use a mSATA SSD along with a stunning 15.6-inch 1080p display for under R12,500. The GX60 currently comes with Hitman: Absolution for free and even bundles in a neat MSI mouse pad.

The bottleneck, however, is the APU. The GX70 aims to fix this by using the successor to AMD’s Trinity family, codenamed Richland.

Richland replaces Trinity on the desktop and mobile front with the same TDP (thermal design power) limits at the same or lower price point.

The GX70 offers AMD’s A10-5750M quad-core APU with built-in Radeon HD8650G graphics and clock speeds at 2.5GHz, boosting up to 3.5GHz in demanding games and applications. It also packs in AMD’s updated Enduro switching technology along with the Radeon HD8790M, with clock speeds of 850MHz boosting to 900MHz.

Not much is said about the GPU itself, although it could come with the enhancements AMD made to PowerTune, which increases efficiency by offering more incremental clock speeds to deliver just enough power for the application you’re running.

In addition, there’s 8GB of DDR3 RAM with support for 32GB, a 17.3-inch LED-backlit 1080p screen, an optional mSATA SSD, 500GB or 750GB of hard drive space, Killer NIC Ethernet networking and MSI Audio boost, along with a customisable, fully backlit keyboard made by Steelseries.

Prospective buyers should also note that Crysis 3 comes bundled for free and the notebook is capable of driving three screens in Eyefinity mode using the on-board HDMI 1.4a, VGA, and Displayport 1.2 connections.

MSI has not announced availability or estimated pricing. MyGaming reached out to distributors asking for more information but they did not reply by the time of publication.
