World’s first GTX780 review leaked

Nvidia’s GTX780 is the flagship model of the Geforce 700 series and is a cut-down version of the Geforce Titan, the world’s fastest single-GPU graphics card. Its arrival is much anticipated by Nvidia fans looking for a viable upgrade that won’t break the bank and all eyes are on AMD as well to see how they officially counter the card or address it at Computex Taipei, due to start up in a few short weeks.

Expreview has been a great source of leaks and specifications for the new GPU family for quite some time and yesterday they accidentally published an unfinished review of the new card.

The scores are quite good and the GTX780 is, overall, 27% faster on average than the outgoing GTX680, due for a rebrand as the GTX770 later this month.

The card demonstrated the biggest leads at higher resolutions, with the 384-bit bus and 3GB of fast DDR5 memory making up for the GTX680’s smaller 256-bit bus and 2GB of GDDR5 RAM.

The largest gains were seen in DiRT3 (an old title that should be swapped for Showdown by now) and Tomb Raider, commanding a sizeable lead over its predecessor.

Against the HD7970 GHz Edition the average lead was 22%, with Batman: Arkham City seeing a 31% increase and Resident Evil 6 seeing 29.65%. The gap was smaller in titles that were part of AMD’s Gaming Evolved program, with Crysis 3, Dirt3, and Sleeping Dogs only seeing 8%, 15.96% and 8.97% performance increases.

Metro: Last Light was not benchmarked but as it is one of Nvidia’s “The Way Its Meant To Be Played” (TWIMTBP) titles, performance increases should be around the 30% region as well.

In terms of power consumption, the GTX780 was on par with the GTX680, GTX Titan, and the Radeon HD7970 GHz Edition. Its in the middle of the GTX Titan and the HD7970, which is good news for those of you planning to run two of these in SLI.

The GTX780 is expected to see a worldwide launch later this afternoon (23 May 2013) as the NDA lifts for reviews; sales may begin in the US, UK and Canada starting tomorrow.
