AMD has announced the introduction of its AM1 platform featuring the quad-core and dual-core Kabini APU.
“Combined with motherboards from leading manufacturers, the new AM1 platform will deliver award winning Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture and AMD Jaguar CPU cores,” said the company in a statement.
The platform, which is promised to be priced “compellingly”, will also feature USB 3.0 and SATA 6GB/s support along with microATX and miniITX motherboards.
The AM1 platform and its accompanying Kabini APUs are targeting the low-end of the desktop market, as well as low-power, sub-notebook, ultra-thin, and tablet devices.
AMD said that desktop motherboard manufacturers ASRock, ASUS, BIOSTAR, ECS, Gigabyte and MSI are all set to deliver a range of next-generation motherboards to support the native USB 3.0 and SATA 6GB/s for AMD Athlon and Sempron-series APUs for the AM1 platform.
Global availability is expected on April 9.
Kabini may ring some bells, as it is from the the Jaguar architecture family. The PS4 and Xbox One use 8-core semi-custom Jaguar-derived APUs. Don’t expect these AM1 platform APUs to be a next-gen console competitor.
