Meet the insane MSI Dominator Pro with GTX 880M

7 April 2014

Now this laptop is worth making a bit of noise about.

With specs blowing away most desktop gaming PCs, the latest MSI GT70 has been fitted with the flagship GTX 880M graphics chipset (plus 8GB of DDR5 video memory), 16GB of DDR3 RAM, an Intel i7 4800MQ quad-core CPU, and a 256GB SSD. Heck, this laptop might even run Watch Dogs on high settings.

The laptop is fairly thick at 55mm, and weighs a wrist straining 3.9kgs, which is expected considering the hardware it is packing.

Eurogamer’s Digital Foundry posted performance results for the laptop, and as you can see below, they are not to be scoffed at.

  • Crysis 3, High, 2x SMAA  – 39.3FPS
  • Tomb Raider, High, FXAA – 103.1FPS
  • Metro Last Light, High, SSAA off – 48.7FPS
  • BioShock Infinite, Very High, Post-AA – 89.4FPS
  • Hitman: Absolution, High, 8x/2x MSAA – 29.2FPS/49.3FPS
  • Thief, High, FXAA, SSAA – 47.5FPS

Update: Local pricing for the Dominator is expected to be around the R35 000 mark.

The big question is, what is the price of all this power? Well, it’s around the £1,799 mark (around R31,000), although no SA pricing was available at the time of publication.

A look at its predecessor leads us to believe it will be much more expensive in South Africa. The MSI GT70 with an nVidia GeForce GTX 780 (4GB) retails for around R47,000 locally.
