MSI recently brought the new kit it unveiled at CES during January to show off in South Africa.
Among the gear it demonstrated was an engineering sample of the MSI GT80 Titan, a beast of a notebook that lives up to its name.
Well, calling it a “notebook” feels wrong. This hearkens back to the days of the “portable PC”. You’re probably not whipping this bad boy out on the Gautrain, but for LANs, being away from home for a long period, or just gaming in the kitchen, it’ll do the trick.
Not only is the GT80 physically massive — it has an 18.4-inch screen — its components pack a serious punch.
It sports dual Nvidia GeForce GTX 980M graphics cards in SLi configuration, up to 4 solid state mSATA drives in MSI “Super Raid 3”, up to 32GB RAM, and a 1TB hard drive.
It also has a tenkeyless mechanical keyboard with Cherry MX Brown switches built in, with a large touchpad that doubles as a number pad when needed.
A maximum spec MSI GT80 Titan will weigh in at around 4.5kg, and is expected to retail in the region of R70,000.
Reducing the specs to 16GB RAM, 256GB of SSD storage, and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 970M graphics card should bring the cost down to R45,000, MSI said.

Another interesting piece of hardware MSI unveiled was a 13-inch ultrabook that docks with something that looks like a Mini-ITX PC.
The GamingDock, as MSI has dubbed it, houses a standard 450W power supply and PCI-Express x16 graphics card, and can also hold a 3.5″ hard drive.
MSI has promised that the GS30 will have full-speed access to the components in the GamingDock.
The notebook itself features a 4th generation Intel Core i7 processor, up to 16GB of DDR3L 1600MHz memory, up to two mSATA solid state drives, and a full HD 13.3″ display.
With the dock, MSI estimates the GS30 will retail for around R30,000 in South Africa.
MSI emphasised that prices for the two devices haven’t been finalised yet, as distributors are able to customise the specifications.
