Back in the golden age of PC gaming, there were many graphics card manufacturers vying for our hard earned cash. As the industry matured, there were essentially two forerunners that retained prominence; ATi and Nvidia.
CPU manufacturer AMD in 2006 acquired ATi, although the ATi branding was retained.
This obviously made sense, as people had become familiar with ATi, and AMD wanted to maintain the brand’s strong position in the market. However, it also caused confusion, as we were buying ATi Radeon graphics cards with AMD branding on them.
Now AMD has announced that the ATi branding is being dropped altogether in favour of an overarching “AMD Vision” concept. There will now be AMD Radeon, and AMD FirePro, although graphics cards released to date under the ATi brand will remain unaffected.
