The likely surefire king of the GPU hill, the Radeon R9 Fury X2, will be delayed a wee bit longer than we hoped for.
We knew AMD’s dual-Fiji XT card would launch in 2016, but by the looks of things we’ll have to wait until Q2 of next year.
That’s according to hardware.fr (thanks KitGuru), who report that AMD is pushing the launch of their high-end, enthusiast card so that it might coincide with the launch of VR headsets like the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.
“Some delays due to VR in overall ecosystem readiness, HMDS are now expected to be available to Consumers by early Q216. To Ensure the best VR experience, we’re adjusting the Fiji Gemini launch schedule to better align with the market.”
When you consider the hardware requirements of the likes of the Oculus Rift, which now apparently requires at least three USB 3.0 ports, you’re going to need something like the R9 Fury X2 for the best possible experience – or so we think.
Though, if NVIDIA’s predictions are anything to go by, it’s probably going to be the case.
NVIDIA obviously believes so because rumour has it they’re working on a dual card of their own.
