Gamers have been gathering at Gen Con Indy, the largest gaming convention in the world, for nearly five decades.
With not long to go before the event pulls thousands of attendees from all around the globe to Indianapolis Convention Center (ICC) once again, here is a rundown of what to expect from the event this year.
Indianapolis Business Journal reported that this year’s Gen Con Indy is projected to attract around 65,000 participants, greater than last year’s record of around 61,000.
This led organisers to expand to ICC’s neighbour, the Lucas Oil Stadium to provide additional space for the event.
For convenience, attendees will be able to use the tunnel connecting the two venues. A map of the Exhibit Hall can be obtained through the convention’s official site.
Set to host more than 500 exhibitors, the city’s official tourism promoter anticipates over USD 70 million worth of economic impact from the event.
Gaming conventions have been popular channels for developers to showcase their work. Exposure alone from being an exhibitor can boost a title’s popularity several times over.
That’s why games across all platforms enter these kinds of events, from tabletop card duels such as Magic: The Gathering and console games like Dark Souls III, all the way to mobile games of every genre including tactical RPG’s such as Pokémon to casual casino games like mobile slots title Starburst from Spin Genie.
Gaming conventions offer much more than just tabletop and video games. Gen Con 2015’s well-received Concert Against Humanity will feature its second set of live performances this year, according to Tech Aeris.
Aside from game exhibitions and concerts, here are some other things to look forward to at Gen Con Indy 2016 as listed by Visit Indy:
- Art show with horror, fantasy and sci-fi themes. The Artist Guest of Honour this year is Tyler Jacobson, creator of numerous artworks in Dungeons and Dragons and Magic: The Gathering.
