Your WhatsApp chats aren’t being deleted

WhatsApp retains and stores chat logs even after those chats have been deleted, according to a report by iOS researcher Jonathan Zdziarski.

Zdziarski found that traces of the chats remained even after the logs had been deleted and can easily be accessed using a backup and recovery tool.

Simply preserving deleted data on a secure device is not usually a significant issue, but when that data comes off the device as freely as WhatsApp’s database does, it poses a rather serious risk to privacy.

Unfortunately, that’s what’s happening here and why this is something users should be aware of.

The WhatsApp chat database gets copied over from the iPhone during a backup, which means it will show up in your iCloud backup and in a desktop backup.

The app may have marked the message to be deleted, but it can be recoverable using forensic or other tools as the new data has not been overwritten.
