Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced studio strikes over Ubisoft layoffs

15 July 2026

Ubisoft Barcelona staff have begun a three-day strike over the recent announcement that 51 of the studio’s staff are at risk of being laid off.

The strike is being organised by the Coordinadora Sindical del Videojuego (CSVI) union and is taking place during negotiations over proposed job cuts.

This follows the recent launch of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced for which, according to tech and gameplay animator Manel Cota on X, the Barcelona team oversaw all underwater levels.

“And that same team is being fired right now because Ubisoft thinks that’s what we deserve,” Cota said.

While these layoffs are coming after the game’s launch, the job cuts were firsts reported on a month ago.

In early June, VGC reported that Ubisoft was closing its Winnipeg and Belgrade studios and restructuring its Barcelona office to focus solely on Rainbow Six projects.

“Ubisoft has initiated a proposed restructuring of Ubisoft Barcelona as part of broader efforts to reduce costs and focus resources on strategic priorities,” said a Ubisoft spokesperson to VGC.

“Under this proposal, the studio would focus solely on Rainbow Six projects, which may impact up to 51 employees.”

“This remains a proposal, and no final decision will be made until the collective consultation process has concluded.”

“We are committed to constructive dialogue with employee representatives and to supporting employees throughout this period.”

The spokesperson also added they are aware of the strike action announced and respect their employees’ right to express their views.

Three-day strike

The three-day strike includes several demands from Ubisoft Barcelona workers:

  • Cancellation of the proposed 51 job cuts.
  • Better job security to prevent future mass layoffs.
  • Reimplementation of the studio’s prior remote working policy which allowed for up to 60% remote working time.
  • Salary increases and promotions that were previously promised.

“Despite the game’s commercial success, 51 Ubisoft Barcelona workers will lose their jobs in the coming weeks. After an intense production, the company claims a ‘strategic shift’ to justify these layoffs.” said a CSVI statement.

“After years of dedication to our team, the company has turned its back on us. We will never see the fruits of our labour, and the reward for our hard work will be the loss of our jobs.”
