Modern Warfare 3 domain a Battlefield fansite

17 July 2011

Activision is up in arms over a joke website created by a die-hard Battlefield 3 fan. The sly fan registered the ModernWarfare3.com domain name, and is using it to instead promote Modern Warfare’s biggest competitor, Battlefield 3.

In response to this, Activision has filed a domain-name dispute with the National Arbitration Forum. Activision is claiming a violation of the rather verbose Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy, arguing that the creator of the site “has no right or legitimate interest in the Domain name.” They go on to provide a list of Modern Warfare’s accomplishments (spanning two pages) as evidence of their own right to the domain name.

The cunning creator of the site purchased the domain name on March 26, 2009, nearly two full years before the 3rd installment of Activision’s golden goose was even announced. Activision is also claiming copyright infringement due to the style of the website’s banner. They also rather obviously claim that the site “supports Battlefield 3”.

One thing is for certain – they certainly don’t support Modern Warfare 3. Check out this quote from their front page: “Modern Warfare is back. On November 8, 2011, the most over-hyped first-person action series of all-time returns with the copy and paste sequel to the lackluster Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.”

For those of you who haven’t seen it, South Africa has a similar gimmick, as the address ps3.co.za redirects to Xbox South Africa.

ModernWarfare3.com previously just redirected to the Battlefield 3 website, but now has banner proclaiming the website is under siege, with a redubbed clip from Monty Python’s “The Life of Brian”. Check it out:
