A team of avid Lord of the Rings fans have come together to work on a project they have called MERP or the Middle Earth Role-Playing Project – a mod that would recreate the Tolkien world in Oblivion’s framework. Shockingly, six-year-old games still have a place in modern society and aren’t taboo to write about, let alone still make mods for.
And now that Skyrim is out and about, with Steam Workshop and Creation Kit at-hand – the team are looking to carry the in-progress mod over to the new Skyrim engine; something that they say they’ve been “preparing” for.
Currently on version 0.2.6 beta, the mod essentially recreates the story of the ring-bearer, with players being able to choose from ten playable races ranging from elves, hobbits, dwarves and men.
The folk at MERP say that their goal as a team is to realise the world of JRR Tolkien as closely as they can.
Their website at MODDB says that they are looking for volunteers who can work with the construction set, artists and 3D designers as well as composers.
Whether this charming and ambitious mod will ever really see the light of day or waft off into obscurity remains to be seen. But let’s be optimistic, wish them luck – because it would be pretty damn cool to see.
The previous Middle-Earth project got scrapped by the Germans who were attempting it.
So sad it didn’t pan out.
The world was rumoured to be 300km2.
With about 300 main quests and around a 800 side quests.
Really liked what I saw in terms of the scale and design, but in the end it was too ambitious and the project died.
Hopefully the Skyrim edition will actually see the light of day, but not holding my breath.
