Psychonauts 2 might actually NOT happen, part 3

16 February 2012

According to a post on his personal blog, Notch says his tweets to Double Fine’s Tim Schafer about possibly, maybe, kind of funding the sequel were done “semi-jokingly”;  “and then the internet exploded,” he jests.

Quick to get the facts out, Notch clarified that heand Schafer hadn’t spoken much beyond a couple of e-mails regarding the project.

He said that the budget for Psychonauts 2 was three times higher than his initial impression and, while there are other parties who seem interested in investing in it, he has no intention of investing in the IP, “as a charity” – but because he would think it profitable.

“Naturally, I wouldn’t want to have any creative input in the game,” he says. “It would purely be a high-risk investment project I believe in.”

Notch added that he’s very scared of the very real risk of people feeling let down by his gamble if it doesn’t pay off.

The original Psychonauts game garnered a bit of a cult following for its quirky humour and eccentric art direction. Highly praised by reviewers and loved by fans, its original commercial release flopped.

He jokingly concluded, “I realise you won’t stop hyping, so I’ll just go into hiding for a few years if it falls through.”
