Deathstar, X-Wing Kickstarter campaigns go head-to-head

11 February 2013

Following the announcement that the US government declined a petition to build a Deathstar, some active fans have taken it upon themselves to kickstart the Galactic Empire vs. Rebel Alliance war.

Some campaigners, going by the name of “gnut”, have asked for £20,000,000 to help finalise the building plans of the Deathstar, because Obama won’t.

“£20,000,000 for more detailed plans and enough chicken wire to protect reactor exhaust ports,” announces the Kickstarter page. Over £200,000 has already been pledged to the Dark Side.

The plan when the initial funding is reached? “Purchase at least 4m sq of high grade chicken wire. We are hoping the death star plans will have at least twice the resolution of the initial design.”

The initial design of the Death Star.

The group also mentions that “to keep costs lower the entire project will use open source hardware and software.”

When that first wave of funding is finally reached, the group asks for an additional £543,000,000,000,000,000, which will be used for the actual construction.

To counter the inevitable Deathstar construction, a project by Simon Kwan hopes to stifle gnut’s plans, by building an X-Wing squadron.

Kwan asks for $11,000,000 to help finance an X-Win prototype, and train a pilot. From there, another $4,485,672,683 will be needed to build an entire squadron.

Stretch goals also include getting a Corellian smuggler and a Wookie co-pilot for a working Class YT-1300 Freighter to assist in the attack.

So far the Rebels have only secured just over $100,000 in pledges. Things aren’t looking good for galactic peace, people!

I’m unsure whether to go with the Dark or Light side; I may just pledge to both and watch things unfold with a box of popcorn.

I find the lack of funding disturbing.
