In yet more gaming-movie news for today, Hollywood Reporter has revealed that 20th Century Fox has acquired rights to the super popular fantasy trading card game Magic: The Gathering, from brand owner Hasbro.
This means that a Magic: The Gathering movie project will likely be in the works, and Hollywood Reporter says it will be a series on the scale of Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings.
Fox’s writer-producer Simon Kinberg (X-Men, Fantastic Four, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Sherlock Holmes, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) will head up the movie adaptation, and has been named as “franchise engineer” for the movie series.
That’s pretty much it for details at this stage, as any potential movie will be in very early planning stages.
Still, this sounds quite exciting, especially if they can live of up to the lofty claims of Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings scale production epics.
There is a huge wealth of lore, creatures, and settings that could be used for the movie – let’s hope Simon Kinberg has a good imagination.
