Nintendo confirmed that Portal and Portal 2 are coming to the Switch later this year as the Portal: Companion Collection bundle during yesterday’s Nintendo Direct Livestream event.
The bundle will be available for $19.99 (R305) in the Nintendo eShop, compared with the Steam bundle’s price of R118.50.
Nintendo has not provided a release date yet, and the store page only lists the games as “available 2022”.
Portal 2’s co-op multiplayer will be available to players, with online multiplayer also being an option, although you’ll need a Nintendo Online Subscription for this.
This follows Valve’s announcement that the Portal games will also be playable on its Steam Deck. However, considering the unavailability of the Steam Deck in South Africa, local gamers will have to look to the Switch for portable gaming.
Nintendo will have more Nintendo Direct events throughout 2022, where more titles will be announced.
Space-bending puzzle antics
The Portal games have you play as the silent protagonist Chell, who tries to escape the Aperture Science Enrichment Centre while a corrupt AI computer system called GLaDOS flings both obstacles and dark humour your way.
Central to the gameplay is the portal gun, which bends both space and the player’s brain as they use it to solve the games’ complex series of puzzles.
