Nintendo Switch global sales approach PlayStation 4 levels

4 August 2022

Nintendo’s quarterly financial results show that its Switch console is close to overtaking the PlayStation 4 in total global sales.

The Japanese company revealed that its console has surpassed 111 million unit sales worldwide since it was released in 2017.

In contrast, the PlayStation 4 was launched in 2013 and is estimated to have sold around 117 million units in its lifetime.

Nintendo explained that while its quarterly unit sales have decreased from 4.45 million to 3.43 million year-on-year, this was due to the semiconductor shortage rather than a lack of demand.

The company still expects to sell 21 million units in the 2022/23 financial year as demand has remained stable for the popular console across all regions.

Nintendo Switch software sales totalled 41.41 million units – down by 8.6% year-on-year
