14 February 2011

Valve head Gabe Newell has shared some details with Forbes regarding his digital empire, Steam, and just how successful the world’s biggest game platform actually is.

Without giving any numbers, Newell confirms that his company is “tremendously profitable”, even more so than Google and Apple per employee. With just 250 employees, Valve’s worth is estimated at between $2 billion and $4 billion, according to Forbes.

With over 30 million active Steam accounts, and 1200 games available from the service, Steam enjoyed a 178 percent year-on-year sales growth last year. According to Forbes, publishers earn a gross margin of around 70 percent on Steam, whereas they only take about 30 percent from retail shops.
