BioWare won’t “break WoW rules” making Star Wars: The Old Republic

15 February 2011

Speaking at the DICE summit, BioWare’s Greg Zeschuk has gone on record saying that Blizzard’s massively popular MMO, World of Warcraft, is the touchstone for developing StarWars: The Old Republic.

According to Furiousfanboys Zeschuk said,  “It is a touchstone. It has established standards, it’s established how you play an MMO. Every MMO that comes out, I play and look at it. And if they break any of the WoW rules, in my book that’s pretty dumb.”

Whether or not this is a good thing remains to be seen. On one hand, one could argue that there is no room for a StarWars themed WoW-clone in the MMO-sphere, but on the other hand, we can understand BioWare wanting to take advantage of certain design principles which have kept millions of gamers coming back to WoW for the past 7 years.

StarWars: The Old Republic is due out sometime this year, and will be released exclusively for Windows.
