Last year EA released what was then touted as the final chapter of the iconic Kane saga in the C&C franchise. One might have easily assumed this to be the end of C&C altogether, however, Rockpapershotgun spotted an update that went live late last night on the official C&C website.
The website revealed plans to create a new C&C, complete with a brand new development studio and community manager to oversee the process.
The C&C site was later reverted to its pre-reveal status, indicating that someone hit the ‘go live’ button a little early, or for the more sceptically inclined, EA is playing a crafty game of cat and mouse with us, dangling information out in the open just long enough for someone to notice, then abruptly pulling it, and hence multiplying the hype factor significantly.
At the time of publication, the site was completely inaccessible. However, Rock papershotgun was able to glean a few juicy details before the site went down. Firstly, a brand new studio is leading up the project: Victory Games. The studio is spread between three separate locations (LA, Texas and Shanghai).
Victory Games boss John Van Caneghem said in an interview on the official C&C page that “Our current focus is making a AAA Command & Conquer game, which I am very excited to be working on…”
“I can tell you it’s a Command & Conquer game for the PC, but we’re not yet at a stage where I can go into any details – we’ll be prepared to make a more formal announcement later in the year. We’re not just working on a game, though. Our general focus is on the future of Command & Conquer. That means updating a lot of the core technology to create a stable base for future development, and leveraging that work on this first game.”
Saying C&C 4 received ‘mixed’ reviews is being kind. It was panned by the majority of publications and users alike. Still, it is great to see that EA at least recognises a future in its core RTS franchise, and for the time being, quite refreshing that it is being kept on PC.
