How we get local gaming servers in South Africa

1 September 2016

One of the biggest selling points about playing games online is playing with a core community.

Local servers help South Africans find one another, foster a community, and provide the best possible pings.

With the news that this year’s Battlefield and Call of Duty games will both have dedicated server support, we spoke to Mweb’s Derrick Kaylor about who decides which games get local servers.

“We host a number of game servers that are either managed by us or by Gameservers.com.”

“We do not have a specific process of selecting which titles to host, for the servers that we manage. Ideally, we would gauge the interest of our customers or the popularity of the game.”

Typically, these are the games that fall outside of what Gameservers.com manage.

Gameservers.com also manages local servers that Mweb hosts. They include titles such as Call of Duty and Battlefield.

Publishers tend to keep their online multiplayer plans under wraps for as long as possible.

For example, Gameservers.com normally hosts two Call of Duty titles at a time, usually the current title and previous title.
