The gaming division of South African Internet Service Provider MWEB has launched their own batch of Battlefield Bad Company 2 servers. MyGaming contacted Brad Kirby, the Games Master at MWEB Gaming, to get some details.
MWEB had been close testing their Battlefield Bad Company 2 servers since Wednesday, 2 March 2011 explained Kirby. The servers were made live for public play on 4 March. MWEB Gaming has set up four 32-player servers, one ‘Rush’ and one ‘Conquest’ at each of the Cape Town and Johannesburg MWEB IPC nodes. The recent implementation of MWEB’s Cape Town IPC node has improved network gaming performance for many of their customers in that region.
Kirby explained that MWEB has provided the servers in partnership with GameServers.com. MWEB provides the hardware and network infrastructure, and GameServer.com implements the software side of the dedicated servers. “Initially, things seem to be performing well from an FPS and latency perspective,” said Kirby.
Kirby also revealed that this is the first sign of MWEB’s plans to bring a lot more game servers onto their network, for both popular older titles as well as the latest games to be released. MWEB will be doing this through a partnership with GameServers.com and through their in-house implementation. Kirby could not share specifics on which games they have planned, but gamers can look forward to an announcement with more details quite soon.
Kirby said that MWEB Gaming has learnt a lot from the teething problems associated with dealing with third party providers such as GameServers.com, and the service level agreements and procedures associated with such partnerships. He believes that MWEB gaming is now well positioned to bring more gaming titles onto their servers.
Another benefit of the GameServers.com agreement is that it allows the South African gaming community to hire and rent their own server space on MWEB equipment, explained Kirby. MWEB remains responsible for the hardware and network provisioning, and the client will be able to set up their own game environment through the GameServers.com control panel. Gaming clans will likely be the first groups to take advantage of such an offering, as they will desire a controlled space on which to practice.
