Ahead of the launch of Dragon Age II on 11 March 2011, BioWare has released a high resolution texture pack for PC gamers who demand more than the ‘adequate’ bog standard textures bundled with the retail version of the game. Console gamers may now look on with jealous rage simmering behind their tear shrouded eyes.
This is a welcome move by BioWare and hopefully it sets a precedent. One of the pleasures of Dragon Age: Origins was to be found in modding the PC version of the game with community developed high-res textures.
According to BioWare, the pack will provide high detail replacements for most textures in the game, and will be especially noticeable on the level art. Using high-resolution textures requires a graphics card with at least 1024MB video memory.
“Most of the benefits from the Hi-resolution textures will only be seen if you are able to run the game in DirectX 11,” said BioWare.
The High Resolution Texture Pack for the PC version of Dragon Age II can be grabbed from the BioWare website.
The pack is 1.08GB large. Thankfully the BioWare server has resume support for those using download managers to obtain large files. With a copy of Dragon Age II installed, gamers need to follow these simple instructions to get the pack working working:
1. Download the installer and run it.
2. Run Dragon Age II.
3. Open the Options menu.
4. Select Video options.
5. Check the “Hi-resolution textures” checkbox.
