Blizzard: no end in sight for WoW

8 March 2011

Speaking to Gamasutra, Blizzard Chief Operations Officer Paul Sams outlined a very positive outlook for the company.

With StarCraft II generating a massive support base on top of the foundation laid by the original, along with a couple of expansions in the pipe, Diablo III generating plenty of hype, and the behemoth WoW financial combine harvester reaping a monthly subscription fee from some 12 million gamers, Blizzard probably has good reason to be smug.

“I think we have a very bright future. We obviously have Diablo III coming out, which we are very confident in,” said Sams “We’re very confident in the other products, supporting products like Warcraft and future expansions there. And there are future expansions to StarCraft II. Those are real mainstays for us.”

Sams discussed Blizzard’s next MMO title, codenamed Titan, which has yet to be officially announced. “I believe [it’s] the most ambitious thing we’ve ever attempted. I feel like we have set our company up to succeed on that. We have some of our most talented and most experienced developers on that team. Many of the people that built World of Warcraft are full time on that other team,” said Sams.

Despite the development of Titan, Blizzard still foresees many years ahead for World of Warcraft. “I see World of Warcraft as having many more years in front of it. We have over 12 million subscribers. We’re continuing to grow and we feel very good about them. We’re going to continue to support that product for many, many years to come,” said Sams.
