Although Civilization VI has had a relatively smooth launch, there are still a number of unaddressed bugs and UI issues,
Luckily, the Civilization Reddit community have pooled their resources and come up with a number of fixes for various issues, along with several quality-of-life improvements.
Check out the most common issues below, or head over to the Civit subreddit to see the full list of fixes if your problem isn’t listed below.
Mouseover tooltips take too long to show up
- Holding shift while mouseovering will make the tooltip show up instantly.
- To increase the speed of tooltips on mouseover, open “Sid Meiers Civilization VI\Base\Assets\UI\ToolTips\Plot Tool Tip.lua” and edit line 32: “local TIME_DEFAULT_PAUSE :number”.
Turn off unit auto cycle
- Navigate to “Documents/My Games/Sid Meyer’s Civilization VI”, open “UserOptions.txt” and find the following line: “Does the selection auto cycle to the next available unit? (0 = no, 1 = yes) AutoUnitCycle 1” and change the 1 to a 0.
Freezing and Crashing
- Windows Defender can cause a number of issues with Civilization VI, including loading screen crashes, freezes, and crashes upon exit. Excluding Civilization VI from Windows Defender seems to fix most of these issues.
Fix edge scrolling at top of screen
- Open “C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Sid Meier’s Civilization VI\Base\Assets\UI\worldinput.xml”.
- It is recommended to change the offset’s location to the top of the screen instead of below the top bar. search for the following text and change the size of the scroll area (in pixels) accordingly:
- Container ID=”TopScreenEdge” Anchor=”L,T” Size=”Full,3″ Offset=”0,0″ /
Container ID=”BottomScreenEdge” Anchor=”L,B” Size=”Full,30″ Offset=”0,0″ /
Fix various audio bugs
There are a number of audio bugs which can usually be fixed by trying the following:
- Open playback devices in Windows and change the frequency from 192kHz to 96kHz.
- Open in-game sound settings, choose the playback device -> Properties -> Advanced and try changing the sound quality.
