Darkspore beta opens for Steam users

29 March 2011

Maxis has announced that as of today (29 March 2011) they have opened a closed beta period for their upcoming online action RPG Darkspore. Maxis intends to use feedback from the beta play phase to further balance and fine-tune the game, incorporating fan input, ahead of its launch on 30 April 2011.

The Steam exclusive Darkspore beta is now open and will run until 21.00 on Friday, 1 April. Players can check out the multiplayer action with up to four people in co-op, or in the 1v1 or 2v2 PvP mode. The download is not an entirely insignificant 5.8GB.

Darkspore is a spin-off from EA’s successful Spore game. Darkspore is a hack ‘n slash RPG title with a sci-fi story setting. Players will be able to customize their characters in a similar vein to the genetic customization found in Spore. There are apparently thousands of body parts to collect throughout the game, on top of weapons and armour.

The story goes that for eons the Crogenitors traversed the galaxy, genetically transforming and sculpting living matter to their will. In their unchecked arrogance they created something they could not control – the Darkspore. Now the galaxy is under siege.

Using the powers of E-DNA, the Darkspore has transformed planetary populations into mutated hordes. Its sole purpose is to dominate life on all planets.

Players take on the role of a fugitive, whom has remained hidden for a millennium. Their mission is to reconstruct an arsenal of genetic heroes and lead the battle against the Darkspore.

The final product will be launching on PC on 30 April 2011.
