Blizzard announced at Blizzcon 2016 that as part of the 20th anniversary celebrations of Diablo, it has recreated its original hack ‘n slash dungeon crawler as a special dungeon in Diablo 3.
All 16 levels of the hellscape under Tristram’s cathedral will be recreated in “Glorious RetroVision™” (we’re not sure that trademark sign is not a joke) — special “90s inspired” audio and visual filters.
Reprising their roles as the four epic boss fights of the game are Diablo, The Butcher, The Skeleton King, and Lazarus.
If the added gloom and grain from the RetroVision™ filters aren’t enough to transport you back in time, the limitation to eight-direction character movement will certainly remind you how much better we have it now.
The 20th Anniversary Dungeon will be released as part of a patch for console and PC called The Darkening of Tristram.
Blizzard said the patch will be live on the public test realm next week.
