Minecraft creator Markus “Notch” Persson turned up on reddit sometime yesterday for one of those regular “Ask Me Anything” features that quickly became a bunch of people asking how much cash he’s made, and people slagging him off because they’re jealous they didn’t come up with the idea first.
Responding to enquiries on the former subject, Persson revealed that it’s “A lot. It all ends up in an account somewhere, and I try not to look at it. I get a normal salary these days for day to day stuff, but there’s a big pile somewhere.
“The game sold about 800,000 copies at 9.95 euro and then so far 1 million more at 14.95 euro. Paypal takes a cut, there are taxes, and such, but it’s still a huge wad of money.”
According to a report on Gamasutra, Minecraft currently lists 1,813,527 paying customers, totalling around €23 or $33 million in revenue. That’s not too bad for a game with graphics imported from 1992.
