Modern Warfare 3 dedicated servers a possibility

10 June 2011

Modern Warfare 2 successfully managed to alienate Call of Duty’s core PC fan base when it was released sans dedicated servers in 2009. The Call of Duty series has not quite recovered the illustrious mantle it once held with PC gamers, but it looks like Activision may be looking to change this with Modern Warfare 3.

When asked about Modern Warfare 3 dedicated servers for PC, Infinity Ward community manager told Gamefront that “I can’t confirm anything yet, but right now we’re having conversations about dedicated servers, mod tools and post launch support.”

“In Modern Warfare 2 we added IWnet, which was all about matchmaking, with the plan to eventually add in dedicated servers.

“My ideal philosophy on the PC is to have matchmaking for the mass – have matchmaking for the guys who just want to jump in, hit play game and start enjoying that. But let’s not lose that dedicated core audience that wants the dedicated server experience.”

“We’re looking at ways on how we can incorporate that into Modern Warfare 3,” added Bowling. “We’ve been listening a lot to our PC guys who have been very vocal since Modern Warfare 2 about what they want to see come back to our versions of the franchise.”

Could this be a sign that Activision is a little worried about losing PC market share to Battlefield 3? Only time will tell what sort of multiplayer system is built into Modern Warfare 3, which is being launched on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 on 8 November, 2011.
