Minecraft reaches 2.5 million sales

14 June 2011

Minecraft creator Markus Persson (aka Notch) has triumphantly tweeted that the game has surpassed 2.5 million sales. “2.5 million sales! That’s as much as Diablo 1 and FarCry, according to Wikipedia.”

According to some rudimentary math based on a Reddit thread in which Notch participated, the game has probably raked in over US$33 million (over R223 million). Not bad for an indie title that started out as a one-man project.

The game is still in beta production, most recently being updated to version 1.6.6. Minecraft beta version 1.7 is on the horizon, promising some significant adventure-centric updates.

Minecraft is also heading to the Xbox 360; we’re still waiting for more information on this.

If you still haven’t hopped on the Minecraft bandwagon, have a look at the video below to see if it tickles your fancy. While the game is in beta it is on sale for a 25% reduced price of Euro15. All future updates will be available to beta purchasers.
