Age of Conan is now free-to-play

1 July 2011

Once considered a potential WoW-killer, the gods of the MMO-verse had different plans for Age of Conan following its release. The game was a desperate disappointment at launch, but that was a few years back and it’s apparently in a much better state now following numerous patches.

As of today, anyone can download and play the game without spending a cent. Previously you had to buy the game as well as pay a monthly subscription fee. Of course, there are numerous catches, and while it is free-to-play, Funcom still wants to make money off of it and has incentivised splashing out on a premium account.

Free-to-play members will be able to choose between four character classes and two character slots. Various other limitations have been imposed on those not paying to play, such as reduced bank space, and limited adventure zones, dungeons, raids and mount training.

Furthermore, sieges, alternative advancement, veteran points and offline levels are not available to free-to-play players.

For €12.95 (R125) per month, these limitations will be lifted.

Essentially, you get a stripped down version of the game for free, which means that you can explore the world of Hyboria for an extended period of time without spending any cash.
