Making Star Wars Galaxies free to play “isn’t financially viable”

17 July 2011

If you’re one of the last four remaining Star Wars Galaxies players, and had hoped the game might be saved from its scheduled termination later this year by moving over to a free-to-play model instead, prepare to be totally disappointed because…

It’s not going to happen.

“[T]hat model just isn’t financially viable,” LucasArts tells GamePro. “Changing the business model for an experience like Star Wars Galaxies takes a major investment and overhauling of the existing infrastructure of the game. We’re unfortunately at a point in our life cycle where a change of this magnitude is just not possible. The harsh reality is that we’ve reached a point where the game is no longer a sustainable business.”

“Any attack made by the Rebels against this station would be a useless gesture, no matter what technical data they have obtained,” adds Admiral Motti, via interstellar broadcast from the Empire’s Death Star, where engineers are already prepping a huge laser battery to destroy the game servers. “Suck it up and go play something else instead.”
