Nintendo has confirmed that it will not be bringing the magic that is Super Mario Galaxy to the 3DS.

It’s a sad announcement, given that Super Mario Galaxy is the Wii’s most critically acclaimed property; but Nintendo has a good explanation.

“When we started developing [Super Mario 3D Land], we displayed Super Mario Galaxy 2 on a small TV monitor and found that Mario looked like a speck and that the game was difficult to play,” said Super Mario 3D Land director Koichi Hayashida speaking to IGN.

“This led us to look into the camera and terrain types that would be conducive to playing on a portable screen with a relatively large Mario. If we were making a console game, from the very start, we wouldn’t have been thinking about any of those things, and I think the game would have probably been a lot different.”

Super Mario Galaxy and its sequel are the two highest scoring Wii games on Metacritic, both earning aggregate scores of 97/100. Super Mario 3D Land has also fared well with reviewers, and is the second highest scoring 3DS game on Metacritic with a score of 90/100.
