Today is day 2 of the MyGaming Awards for 2011, and this time we’re going to take a look at what the MyGaming staff believed the top game in each genre to be.
Which game scored the top first-person shooter spot? Which racer sped its way to first position? Read on to find out!
Genre Awards 2011
Best Role-Playing Game
Winner: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
No real surprises here – despite Bethesda’s massive epic being buggy (as is ever their style) and a bit laggy (on consoles at least), that hasn’t stopped everyone in the MyGaming office from sinking almost every available hour into the game.
Must. Gather. All. The. Cabbages.
And kill dragons and stuff.
Runner-up: Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Best Third-Person Action Game
Winner: Batman: Arkham City
Gears, Uncharted and Assassin’s Creed were all fighting it out for the top spot here, but the Dark Knight swooped overhead, strung them all up, and introduced them to his fists of awesomeness to claim the prize. They didn’t even see it coming – and they never even came close to beating him.
Runner-up: Gears of War 3
Best First-Person Shooter
Winner: Portal 2
While not what you’d traditionally label a “shooter” – Portal 2 involves shooting, and it happens in a first-person view, so it totally counts – and it totally topped MyGaming’s best shooter section without so much as a whiff of competition from Modern Warfare 3 or Battlefield 3.
Runner-up: Battlefield 3
Best Sports Game
Winner: NBA 2K12
Sports games aren’t the most popular genre around the MyGaming office, but even we couldn’t deny how unexpectedly awesome NBA 2K12 ended up being. Amazing detail, zippy gameplay and loads of cheering later, it edged out top-footie game, FIFA 12, to be the best of 2011.
Runner-up: FIFA 12
Best Platformer
Winner: LIMBO (PSN, PC)
LIMBO first appeared on Xbox LIVE last year and was an awesome game back then. This year, the PlayStation Network and the PC got to have its fill of the creepy silhouetted platformer – and we simply can’t get enough of it. Release it on the PS Vita next year, so we can put it at the top of another list!
Runner-up: Rayman Origins
Best Racing Game
Winner: Forza 4
The Xbox 360-exclusive racing simulator zoomed past Mario Kart 7 and DiRT 3 to be voted as MyGaming’s best racer for this year. While not as “arcadey” and pick-up-and-play as the other contenders – the sheer quality and style (not to mention the sexy cars) assured a podium position at number 1.
Runner-up: DiRT 3
Best Fighting Game
Winner: Mortal Kombat 9
2011 wasn’t the biggest year for fighting games – but even so, nothing would have stopped MK9 from being our best fighting game of the year. Perhaps we at MyGaming are a bit bloodthirsty, or just have [not very well] hidden sadistic streaks within us – but the gory brawler’s move to old-skool (sic) arcade fighting, with modern stylings and plenty of claret – is simply a combination we can’t ignore.
Runner-up: Super Street Fighter IV
Best Indie Game
Winner: MineCraft
After being in development since the beginning of time – Minecraft put on its big-boy pants and finally got it’s full 1.0 release this year. It was like watching our own child graduate from high school and step foot into the big bad gaming world. Luckily, he held his own, and ended up being an awesome game – with the promise of more development to come for a long while yet.
Runner-up: Bastion
