Modern Warfare 2 free this weekend on Steam

8 April 2010

Valve has announced a pretty exciting promotional exercise for Activision’s contentious FPS, Modern Warfare 2.

According to Valve, “beginning this Thursday, April 8, gamers around the world can play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer free of charge during a special Free Weekend promotion on Steam.”

“The definitive online experience, Modern Warfare 2 returns with a host of new perks and enhancements. Those who wish to enjoy every moment of the Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer Free Weekend may pre-load the game now.”

This means that Steam users can login and download the game right now without paying a cent, and they will be able to play the full multiplayer component until the end of the weekend.

There has been a lot of controversy around this game, particularly the PC version and its lack of dedicated server support. Regardless of its flaws, when the multiplayer is working it is one of the most enjoyable online games currently available.

It is already possible to start downloading the 11.5 GB install files, and after 11PM tonight, the game will be completely playable until the end of the weekend.

Special deals like this are often available via Steam, and now with local uncapped broadband becoming affordable, South African gamers can take full advantage.
