StarCraft II map editor inbound, Mac client to follow

The Internet is buzzing with a rumour that the StarCraft II beta will receive a major patch sometime this week, bringing with it the highly anticipated StarCraft II Galaxy Editor (read map editor). Those lucky enough to be involved in the beta trial can start working on their custom game masterpieces. The rest will have to wait until it is leaked to torrents officially released later this year.

Of course, beta users will not have the ability to upload their maps via Battle.net, or make use of the StarCraft II Marketplace. If you haven’t been keeping up, the Marketplace is a platform that will allow modders to sell their custom maps, and in the words of Blizzard design head Rob Pardo “share in the rewards of our success.”

Regardless, beta players will no doubt appreciate the chance to tinker with the nuts and bolts of the game, and serious modders can get down to their magnum opus.

In other news, our oft neglected PC gaming brethren, the Mac OS users, will also be receiving a beta client soon, rumoured to be arriving a few days after the patch rollout.

Blizzard has yet to officially confirm these rumours, but if we have learnt anything from history, it’s that you shouldn’t underestimate the effectiveness of a Zergling rush, and that rumours often prove prophetic.
