HoN World Cup launched, US40 000 to be won

Heroes of Newerth will be hitting retail today and in celebration, SteelSeries and GosuGamers have put together the SteelSeries HoN World Cup. The SteelSeries HoN World Cup boasts a US$40 000 (±R300 700) prize pool, meaning there is cold hard cash up for grabs for top competitive players. Tournament registration begins on 19 May and closes on 1 June.

The tournament will follow a similar format to that of the football World Cup. The world is first divided into five regions: – Southeast Asia; Eastern European Qualifier; Western Europe & Africa; North & South America; Asia, Oceania & Mixed.

In each region 128 teams can enter on a first serve basis, and the top teams will then be admitted to a group stage of 64 teams. 16 groups will be formed, with the top two from each going on to the playoff stage. The prize pool is divided up as follows:

2nd Place – $5,000
3rd Place – $3,000
4th Place – $2,000
5th to 8th – $800
9th to 16th – $500
17th to 32nd – $300
33rd to 64th – $200

Tournament rules

A detailed list of the tournament rules and complete registration instructions will be announced in the next few days.

The tournament will also cater to non-professional gamers who just want to be part of the fun, by holding additional side competitions. Three have been promised, with two announced so far.

SteelSeries Mousepad Design Contest

Registered members of the GosuGamers community will be able to submit their HoN concept artwork to SteelSeries and one lucky person’s fan art will be chosen. Full contest details will be announced soon on Facebook.

World Cup Pick’em

Each participating team in the HoN World Cup will be asked to pick the nation that they think will win the 2010 FIFA World Cup this summer upon registration. The teams which correctly pick the World Cup Champions will automatically be entered into a random lottery in which one lucky team will win US$1000.
