StarCraft II development budget soars past $100 million

19 July 2010

A WallStreet Journal article has revealed that over $100 million has been spent on developing StarCraft II, which is due to be released later this month.

Bobby Kotik was quoted as saying “There is no shortage of consumers for StarCraft, “For a game that is more than ten years old, there’s millions of people still playing it.”

StarCraft and its expansion Brood Wars have sold a combined 11 million units.

Development on StarCraft II began in 2003. Full scale production, however, only kicked off in 2005, and the game was announced to the world in 2007.

$100 million is a lot of cash, even for a massive AAA scale video game. However, as a poster over at Gamasutra points out, one month of World of Warcraft subscriptions more than pays the entire cost.
