Steam’s controller unveiled: finally a controller for PC gamers

Steam Controller

We finally have some new screenshots as well as a video featuring Valve’s Steam Controller. Now in its final beautiful form, we can gasp at this beaut of a controller.

In the video showcased, you can see the controller being used to play a variety of games including The Witcher 3.

The Steam Controller is a unique controller in that it features dual trackpads, HD haptic feedback, dual-stage triggers, back grip buttons, along with customisable control schemes for all your favourite games.

You can choose your favourite control mappings from the Steam community, so you’re not stuck with one fixed set of controls for your games.

The most noteworthy feature of the controller are the dual trackpads which Valve claims enables:

The high-fidelity input required for precise PC gaming in the living room. Allowing for 1:1 absolute position input via virtual controls like a trackball, adaptive centering joystick, or steering wheel, these surfaces can be programmed to serve up whatever a game needs.

What this means is the controller could possibly let you play your favourite strategy games and perhaps even DOTA 2.

Limited quantities of the controller will be shipped October 16th, in advance of the official launch. You can pre-order the Steam Controller now if it piques your interest.

We love the design of the Steam Controller and see many possibilities for Valve’s first entry into the peripheral market. Whether this is a success is up to PC gamers and if they are willing to let go of their mouse and keyboards for a controller.

PC gamers have been using different peripherals for many years (controllers, joysticks, steering wheels). Controllers are not new to us; we are used to adapting to the best tool for the job. I really don’t understand where this belief comes from that we only want to use a keyboard and mouse.

We have a system that can adapt to how we prefer to play so why would we be so myopic in our choice of gaming input?

We aren’t all so blown away by having the option of a PC controller, most of us who play games which could be better using a controller have an Xbox 360 (or some other) controller for our PCs already.

Seriously guys please have someone who is an actual PC gamer covering pc gaming peripherals. Or at least refrain from ignorant statements like the one in this article, who knows perhaps you were trolling PC gamers and I jumped at it. Either way it’s annoying as hell.
