Marvel and Activision have teamed up on a new X-Men game, and Canadian developer Silicon Knights has been put at the helm of the project.
X-Men: Destiny is being penned by by X-Men: Legacy writer, Mike Carey. Players will step into the boots of a new recruit in Professor Xavier’s mutant army, and the game will supposedly feature a “branching storyline” and give players a “deep element of choice.”
Whether or not this is just marketing banter remains to be seen. Games based on comic-book characters have traditionally stuck to action-based genres, such as platformers or basic arcade fighters. Batman: Arkham Asylum offered a bit more depth, and achieved critical praise for its achievements. If Silicon Knights can develop an engaging world with real depth (think Mass Effect 2), then X-Men: Destiny might just be the next groundbreaking comic book game.
X-Men: Destiny is being developed exclusively for console, and will be debuted at this weekend’s New York Comic-Con. It is set for release late next year.
