If you’re a part of PC gaming’s most prolific gaming distributor, Steam, then you likely received notification that Steam would support the South African Rand from November 10th.
The news came by way of the email that follows:
“Dear Steam User,
Steam will soon be priced in South African Rand!
If your Steam wallet has any money in it on November 10th, 2015, your U.S. Dollar balance will be converted to Rand, at a conversion rate dictated by market value at the time of conversion.
To view your account balance, simply log into your Steam client or the Steam website. Once you have logged in, you will see your balance in the upper-right corner next to your account name.
Thanks,
The Steam Support Team”
We’ve known since as early as May that Steam would eventually be supporting our local currency, the Rand.
Rather unfortunately, many of us have been dreading this newest update to Steam. The strength of the Rand is hardly worth writing home about, and what about the digital VAT that came into play from June 1st?
Up until now, Valve has largely ignored local VAT, but it’s very likely that we may see a price increase locally as part of the migration to the Rand.
For the moment, Valve has yet to respond when asked about SA’s digital VAT.
As far as we’re concerned, we’re a little bummed by the prospect of a price increase. South Africa is expensive enough to live in as is.
Local isn’t always lekker; just saying.
